Division can leave a remainder

Not every division shares out exactly. remainder , because and is left over. The remainder must always be smaller than the number you are dividing by.

Multiplying and dividing 3-digit numbers uses the same ideas

For , work column by column from the ones, renaming when a column reaches 10 or more, just like in addition: (write 8, carry 1), and so on.

Two-step word problems can mix multiplication and division

Read for two separate actions. "Buy 5 boxes of 8 pencils, then share them equally among 4 friends" needs a multiplication first (to find the total), then a division.
