What you'll learn

A ratio compares quantities of the same kind; a rate compares quantities with different units.

  • A **ratio** compares amounts of the same kind: \(2 : 3\) means 2 parts to 3 parts.
  • Ratios simplify like fractions: \(4 : 6 = 2 : 3\).
  • To **share** in a ratio, add the parts: \(2 : 3\) has \(2 + 3 = 5\) parts.
  • A **rate** compares different units, such as \(60\) km per hour or a price per item.
  • **Proportion** means two ratios are equal: \(2 : 3 = 4 : 6\).
