How PSLE cut-off points work

Since 2021, every PSLE subject is graded on an Achievement Level (AL) from 1 to 8, and a child's PSLE Score is the total of their four subject ALs, so it runs from 4 (best) to 32. When Secondary 1 posting happens, each school and track has a cut-off point: the PSLE Score of the last student admitted that year. Because a lower AL is better, a lower cut-off point means the school or track was more competitive to get into.

Since Full Subject-Based Banding replaced the old Express/Normal (Academic)/Normal (Technical) streams, students are posted into a Posting Group instead: PG3 (formerly Express), PG2 (formerly Normal Academic) or PG1 (formerly Normal Technical). Some schools also offer the Integrated Programme (IP), a six-year track straight through to the A-Levels with no O-Levels in between.

A number of schools give priority to “affiliated” applicants, usually students from a linked primary school, and those applicants can be admitted with a higher (weaker) PSLE Score than an open applicant. Where a school's affiliated cut-off is known it is shown alongside the open one on that school's page; where it isn't published, the page says so instead of guessing.

Cut-off points move every year depending on how many students apply and how they score, so last year's figures are a guide to how competitive a school tends to be, not a promise of what it will take this year.
