Let's learn
Matras (Vowel Signs)
Matras are vowel signs added to a consonant to change its sound.
What this topic covers
- A consonant like क already carries the sound 'ka'.
- A **matra** changes the vowel sound: क + ा = का (kaa).
- The matra for इ is ि and is written **before** the letter: क + ि = कि (ki).
- The matra for उ is ु: क + ु = कु (ku).
- With matras you can build every syllable from the same consonant.
