Matras (Vowel Signs)

Matras are vowel signs added to a consonant to change its sound.

What this topic covers

  • A consonant like क already carries the sound 'ka'.
  • A **matra** changes the vowel sound: क + ा = का (kaa).
  • The matra for इ is ि and is written **before** the letter: क + ि = कि (ki).
  • The matra for उ is ु: क + ु = कु (ku).
  • With matras you can build every syllable from the same consonant.
