Varnamala (Alphabet)
Hindi is written in the Devanagari script. Its letters split into vowels (swar) and consonants (vyanjan).
What this topic covers
- Hindi vowels are called **swar** (स्वर). The first ones are अ, आ, इ, ई, उ, ऊ.
- Hindi consonants are called **vyanjan** (व्यंजन). They begin क, ख, ग, घ.
- Every letter has its own sound. क sounds like the 'k' in 'kite'.
- Devanagari letters hang from a top line called the **shirorekha** (शिरोरेखा).
- You read and write Hindi from left to right, just like English.
